RAJOURI, Apr 14: Tension gripped Nowshera town today after the family members and relatives of a woman staged a strong protest, blocking the Jammu-Poonch National Highway at Nowshera bridge for nearly two hours, following her mysterious death.
The deceased, identified as Juley Charnal, wife of Inderjeet Singh, resident of Kanara (Nowshera) and originally hailing from Dhangri (Rajouri), died under suspicious circumstances early in the day.
As per reports, the woman was initially admitted to Sub District Hospital (SDH) Nowshera and later referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu. However, she passed away while en-route, at SDH Sunderbani.
According to Block Medical Officer (BMO) Sunderbani, Dr Meena Kumari, the postmortem was conducted at SDH Sunderbani as per protocol. Tension escalated when, during the return of the deceased’s body to her in-laws’ residence, her parents and relatives intercepted the ambulance at Nowshera bridge and blocked the highway, alleging foul play.
The parents of the deceased claimed that it is a case of murder. They alleged that Juley was subjected to physical torture as visible injury marks on her body were found.
SDPO Nowshera, Sahil Mahajan, reached the spot and assured the aggrieved family that a fair and transparent investigation will be carried out, and anyone found guilty will be brought to justice. He also confirmed that the deceased’s husband, Inderjeet Singh, is currently in police custody for questioning.
Following the assurance from the police, the protest was called off after nearly two hours, and traffic movement on the highway was restored.
