Bindal: Cong insulted architect of Constitution hundreds of times

On the occasion of Dr BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary, BJP state president Dr Rajeev Bindal paid floral tribute to the statue of Dr Ambedkar at the Nahan Bus Stand. Addressing the gathering, Dr Bindal said the birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar was being celebrated with great enthusiasm across Himachal Pradesh. He said the BJP was organising commemorative events in all 171 mandals of the state to pay homage to the architect of the Indian Constitution.

Dr Bindal launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing it of repeatedly disrespecting Dr Ambedkar. “It was the Congress and its leaders who insulted Dr Ambedkar hundreds of times. They even denied him the Bharat Ratna, clearly reflecting their disregard for his immense contribution,” he said.

He further pointed out that despite Dr Ambedkar’s unmatched role in shaping the Constitution and advocating for social justice, Congress governments under leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi never honoured him with the Bharat Ratna. In contrast, Dr Bindal noted that in 1970, the Congress government awarded the Padma Bhushan to NS Kajrolkar, the candidate who had defeated Dr Ambedkar in the 1952 elections.

Dr Ambedkar was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1990, under the leadership of then Prime Minister VP Singh, whose non-Congress government was backed by the BJP. During this period, Dr Ambedkar’s portrait was also installed in the Parliament House, thanks to the efforts of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Dr Bindal also accused the Congress of systematically weakening the Constitution, especially through misuse of Article 356, which allows the imposition of President’s Rule in states. “From the Emergency to reservation policies, the Congress has only worked to erode democratic values. If any party has attacked democracy time and again, it is the Congress,” he stated.

Quoting Dr Ambedkar’s own reservations about the potential misuse of Article 356, Dr Bindal said instead of being used as an exception, the Congress made it a tool of political manipulation. He alleged that Congress governments invoked President’s Rule recklessly to dismiss non-Congress state governments and centralise power within a single family.
