Injury Scare: PBKS Bowler's IPL 2025 Participation Uncertain
Punjab Kings have been hit with a major setback in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, as fast bowler Lockie Ferguson is likely to miss the remainder of the tournament due to injury.
Ferguson was forced to leave the field after bowling just two balls in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. In his four appearances so far, he has claimed five wickets.
Coach James Hopes provides update
Punjab Kings' bowling coach James Hopes provided an update ahead of their match against KKR on Tuesday (April 15), confirming that Ferguson will be out indefinitely and there is little chance of him returning before the season ends.
Hopes mentioned that Ferguson's injury appears to be quite severe, which is a big blow for captain Shreyas Iyer and the team.
“Ferguson's out indefinitely, and us getting him back by the end of the tournament is a very low percentage. I think he's done a real decent injury to himself,” said Hopes in the pre-match press conference.
In Ferguson's absence, Azmatullah Umarzai could be recalled to the playing XI. Though Umarzai had a brief and unremarkable stint earlier in the season, the team may give him another opportunity.
Alternatively, young fast bowler Vijaykumar Vishaka, who impressed in his debut match, might get a chance to showcase his skills. Yash Thakur, who was used as an impact player against Hyderabad, could also be considered for a spot in the playing XI.
Punjab Kings' upcoming match against Kolkata Knight Riders is a critical opportunity to secure two essential points, following their somewhat inconsistent record of three wins and two losses.
"We've only played a couple of games here (New PCA Cricket Stadium, Punjab) and we feel we're getting a pretty good hang on the conditions with a couple of practice matches and the last two games here. We're obviously going to have to change our team up a bit with Ferguson not being able to play," added coach Hopes.
