Vaping may seem like a safer alternative to smoking, but behind the clouds of flavoured vapour lies a serious and often overlooked threat- popcorn lung. This rare but irreversible lung disease is making headlines again after a 17-year-old cheerleader developed life-threatening breathing issues linked to her daily vaping habit. As more young people turn to e-cigarettes, it’s crucial to uncover the real risks hidden in those sleek devices.
Both vaping and smoking pose significant health risks. Both habits can lead to nicotine dependence and increase the risk of cardiovascular problems along with other chronic issues.
Brianna Martin, a high school cheerleader, suddenly developed breathing difficulties and after diagnosis, it was found that she had Bronchiolitis Obliterans, also known as 'popcorn lung'. She was addicted to vaping and has been using the disposable vape daily for three years.
Studies have revealed that vaping has been linked to several serious health issues, including respiratory problems, cardiovascular risks, and nicotine addiction. Nicotine in e-liquids can lead to dependence and increased heart rate and blood pressure.
Additionally, vaping products often contain harmful substances like heavy metals, ultrafine particles, and volatile organic compounds.
What is popcorn lung?
Bronchiolitis obliterans, commonly known as 'popcorn lung', is a condition that damages the lungs' smallest airways. It got the name 'popcorn lung' in the early 2000s when workers at a microwave popcorn factory developed this condition after prolonged exposure to a chemical called diacetyl, which was used to give popcorn its buttery flavour.
Popcorn lung can also develop after exposure to other toxic fumes, chemicals, or even from complications of respiratory infections.
Vaping these days has also been linked to popcorn lung as vape products have been found to contain diacetyl. Over time inhaling these can irritate and scar the lung's airways.
What are the symptoms?
The early symptoms of popcorn lung include dry cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, and fatigue. The symptoms show up between two weeks and two months.
The damage is progressive and irreversible if not diagnosed early. However, as far as the treatment is concerned, doctors usually give antibiotics or steroids to ease the inflammation.
