New Delhi: India’s defense sector under the Modi government has seen a massive transformation. The authorities are working relentlessly to strengthen its military capabilities. For the first time, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has demonstrated the capability of neutralizing a target using a laser weapon. DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat gave a massive update about India’s first indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter jet.

On Sunday, Kamat stated that India will receive its first fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), by the year 2035.

What did the DRDO Chief say?

DRDO Chairman Sameer V. Kamat said that developing a new fighter jet takes a lot of time. He stated, “If you look at any program anywhere in the world, it takes 10 to 15 years to develop a new platform. We started this in 2024 itself, when the CCS approved the project. So it will still take ten years, and we have promised to deliver a 5th-generation stealth fighter jet by 2035. This means India will have to wait a little longer to get a modern, technologically advanced combat aircraft.”

“We want to start an aero engine program…”

He further added that the DRDO want to start an aero engine program and we wish to collaborate with a foreign OEM to reduce development risks. Aero engine technology is a very complex technology, although we have learned a lot from the Kaveri. Kaveri was a fourth-generation engine.

Good news likely in a few months – Kamat

Kamat said that the current engine technology has moved into the sixth generation, so to reduce risks and shorten development time, India wants to work with foreign OEMs. He expressed hope that some good news on this front will come in the next few months. This means that India will collaborate with foreign companies to manufacture engines for its fighter jets, which will help reduce both the time and risk involved in engine development.
