Mahira housing project buyers stage protest, demand revocation of licence
Hundreds of homebuyers of a Mahira housing project staged a protest on Sunday, seeking the revocation of a cancelled licence.
Homebuyers claimed that the cancellation of the project licence had not served the interests of genuine buyers, who had invested their hard-earned money with the dream of owning a home under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).
They have, yet again, submitted a demand letter to the DTCP and the HRERA, seeking the renewal of the license of Mahira 68 with strict compliance terms, opening of escrow or project accounts with appropriate safeguards and transparent monitoring, allowing the builder to resume construction under supervision and guidelines, and ensuring timely delivery of homes to the rightful buyers.
“Cancelling the licence of the project has served no purpose for us. We want our homes — the dream that was sold to us. We have invested our life savings, and, now, all our hopes have been smashed. We placed our trust in government-backed initiatives like PMAY, and the regulatory framework to protect our interests. Please do not punish innocent buyers for issues beyond our control,” the demand letter read.
The project has been on a standstill for over three years due to regulatory action.
Homebuyers claim this has caused immense mental, financial and emotional distress to thousands of families.
“While we understand the importance of accountability, we believe that halting construction indefinitely is not the right solution. It has become the biggest setback for us buyers, and we urge you not to let this be a permanent mistake,” they added.
