Three escape from police custody; SHO, five others suspended

A station house officer (SHO) and five others, including three home guard jawans, were placed under suspension for negligence here on Sunday after three persons escaped from their custody last night.

Those suspended included Kabarwala police station SHO Davinder Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jarnail Singh and Assistant Munshi Narinder Singh.

The three home guard jawans placed under suspension were Gurmeet Singh, Manjit Singh and Mehtab Singh, who were on duty at the police station at the time of the incident.

Those who fled from the police custody included Buta Singh of Muktsar and Lovetain of Fazilka, who were arrested with 3.3 quintal of poppy husk on Thursday.

The third accused, Shamsher Singh of Kattianwali village, was arrested in an attempt to murder case. A case has also been registered against the ASI, assistant munshi and the home guard jawans.

Senior police officers, including Muktsar SSP Akhil Chaudhary, visited the Kabarwala police station today and formed teams to nab those who fled from the police custody.

“One of the three accused, Buta Singh, has been rearrested. The SHO and five others were suspended for their negligence. Besides, an FIR has been registered in this regard," said the SSP.

He said the accused had managed to partially break the window grills of their lock-up to escape.

“The police station building is very old and I will now take up the matter of its reconstruction with the higher authorities," added the SSP. Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector Ravinder Kumar was posted as the SHO of the Kabarwala police station.
