Shubham clinches overall trophy at chess meet

Ludhiana’s Shubham Shukla bagged the overall trophy at the inaugural edition of the Chandigarh Shatranj Academy Open Prize Money Rapid Chess Tournament, which concluded today at Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45.

Shukla won the trophy with a total of 8 points. Swastik Singhal, with 7.5 points, came second and Medhansh Goyal, with 7 points, stood third at the tournament, which was organised by Chandigarh Shatranj Academy.

Aaditya Pajni, Amanpreet Singh and Vivaan Mittal claimed fourth, fifth and sixth position, respectively. Behind them were Suraj Dahiya, Sumit Grover, Aryan Mehta, Pardeep Singh Negi, Ojasvi Khattar, Kunal, Arpit Anand and Bhavya Seth, all of whom scored 6.5 points each.

The boys’ U-15 event saw Sukant Mohindra and Sidharth Bhargav post 6 and 5 points, respectively, to emerge as the winners. In the girls’ category, Aayra Singh’s 5.5 points and Dusicka Yumlembam’s 5 points saw them finish at the top of the podium.

Shivam Thakur, with 6 points and Sidharth Bhargav, at 5.5, were the two top scorer of boys’ U-13 age group. Harshita Sharma, with 5 points and Saanvi Aggarwal, with 4.5 excelled in the girls’ group.

A total of 131 boys and girls from all over India participated in this rapid chess tournament.

At the closing ceremony and prize distribution, Manbir Singh, president of the Chandigarh Chess Association gave away 41 prizes to the winners of various categories.
