Vinesh Phogat: Will set up international sports academy with prize money
After the Haryana Government agreed to give wrestler-turned-MLA Vinesh Phogat a cash award of Rs 4 crore and a residential plot, she has announced that she would set up an international academy with the prize money.
Sharing her statement on Facebook, she said, “The true victory is when a player’s hard work is honoured. The people have given me so much — love, respect, trust, courage, and motivation. Now it’s time to repay all of that."
She added, “As a public representative, and given the struggles I’ve been a part of, my responsibilities are no longer just as a player, but also towards thousands of dreams that seek to build a future in a safe environment through sports."
“It has always been my dream to provide better facilities and a supportive sports environment for the next generation of athletes. That time has now come. I will forever be grateful for the love and honour that society and the Haryana Government have given me for my performance in the Olympics. The reward amount given by the government is not just a prize — it is an opportunity, a means to fulfill that dream I’ve held onto for years."
She wrote, “Therefore, this reward will be used to establish an international-level sports academy, where young athletes can take their talent to new heights with the best resources.”
She stated that it would be an academy where budding athletes would not just get access to requisite resources, but also receive the respect and motivation that every hardworking athlete deserves.
“That’s why I will need all your support — because this isn’t just my dream, it’s ours."
