Summer season is here, and mango lovers are ready to enjoy their favourite fruit. As soon as summer begins, many varieties of mangoes start appearing in the market. Indian mangoes are in high demand worldwide because of their delicious taste and wide range of varieties. But do you know about a man who loves mangoes more than anyone else? Kaleem Ullah Khan, also known as the ‘Mango Man of India’, has a tremendous love for gardening and mangoes. He is very famous among mango lovers all over the country.

India’s mango exports have reached record levels. In 2023-24, 27,330.02 metric tons of mangoes, valued at USD 47.98 million, were exported. This figure increased to USD 60.16 million in 2024, marking the highest export value in the past five years. A variety of Indian mango types, including Dussehri, Langra, Chaunsa, Alphonso, and Totapuri, are shipped internationally.

Who is Kaleem Ullah Khan?

Kaleem Ullah Khan hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Malihabad, a place famous across India for its mangoes. He did something with a 120-year-old mango tree, which is nothing less than magic. Khan used his gardening techniques, and 300 types of mangoes started growing on the tree. Interestingly, taste, size and colour of each mango is different. Experts and mango lovers come from far and wide to see this unique tree.

Kaleem is a big-time gardening lover who started planting saplings when he was 17. Instead of taking up a job, he decided to spend his time with trees. He was always thinking of doing something new. He kept experimenting with different things to grow something new. Gradually, he became so adept at grafting mangoes and other fruits that he became a master of this field.

Honoured With Padma Shri

Khan’s hard work was recognised in the year 2008 by the government as he was awarded Padma Shri. He received this honour for his excellent work in gardening. Especially for his art of growing different types of mangoes on a single tree.

Very Few People Are Able To Do This

Khan takes pride in his title and continually expands his knowledge of mangoes.  His ambition is to cultivate numerous new mango varieties and establish India as a global leader in mango production.

Common Names After Different Celebrities

Indian mango cultivator Kaleem Ullah Khan distinguished himself by naming his mango varieties after famous celebs. Instead of using traditional names, he chose names like Aishwarya (in 1994, coinciding with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Miss World win), Anarkali, Sachin Tendulkar, and Narendra Modi, adding a unique element to his agricultural endeavours.
