Murshidabad: Mamata appeals for peace after Murshidabad violence; BJP accuses TMC of communal politics
Following the violent clashes in Murshidabad on Friday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted an appeal urging people to maintain peace and not allow politics to incite communal unrest. According to Mamata, political motives are behind the rising tensions in the state. Meanwhile, the ongoing political blame game between TMC and BJP has intensified, with both parties accusing each other of fueling the violence for electoral gains. In a press conference, BJP spokespersons showed photos alleging that Hindu shops were vandalized in Shamsherganj, Murshidabad. The BJP claims Hindus are being specifically targeted in the region. Mamata, on the other hand, has appealed not to exploit communal differences for political gain, asserting that her government supports peace and harmony. The BJP alleges that Mamata is catering to the Muslim vote bank, while the BJP is attempting to consolidate Hindu votes in West Bengal. This growing communal polarization is seen as part of the strategic electoral battle between the two parties. After its success in Delhi, BJP appears to be sharpening its Hindutva agenda to challenge Mamata’s stronghold, especially after TMC secured 75% of Muslim votes and BJP bagged nearly 50% of the Hindu vote share in the 2021 assembly elections.
