Public cooperation necessary in fight against drugs: Police
The police claimed to have initiated a drive to seek the cooperation of the masses in the fight against drug abuse under the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign, launched by the state government.
The inaugural event, to rope in office-bearers and activists of various social organisations, was held at MGMN Senior Secondary School under supervision of SSP Gagan Ajit Singh.
Municipal Council president Vikas Krishan Sharma chaired the function, while SP (H) Gursharan Singh Sandhu, Ahmedgarh DSP Rajan Sharma and city SHO Randeep Sharma were among the keynote speakers.
Terming concern and cooperation of the general public an indispensable tool for the administration to fight any challenge Sandhu said the menace of drug abuse could not be curbed without the genuine cooperation of all sections of society, including political leaders, members of social organisations and youths.
“It is on record that the Punjab Police is known the world over for curbing insurgency and militancy, which would not have been possible without the cooperation of the public during the dark days,” said Sandhu, maintaining that fighting narco-terrorism would also become easier when people start cooperating with the police to identify drug peddlers in their respective areas.
Besides elaborating on the various aspects of the crusade launched against drug abuse DSP Rajan said the information received from the public on WhatsApp (number 9779100200) was kept a secret and even investigating officials were not aware of the identity of the information provider.
Sharma said SHOs Randeep Sharma and Sukhwinder Singh had been advised to ensure that all inputs provided by people were promptly verified and used to take action against antisocial elements.
SSP Gagan appreciated residents, including office-bearers of various organisations, who had started coming forward to provide information about activities of drug peddlers in their respective localities.
Singh said personnel at various police stations had been advised to visit playgrounds, gymnasia, parks and other public places with a focus to collect information about drug peddlers and their sympathisers in their respective areas.
