Why Is Hanuman Janmotsav Celebrated Widely In India?
Hanuman Jayanti or Hanuman Janmotsav is a Hindu festival that marks the birth of Lord Hanuman, one of the most loved and powerful deities in Hindu mythology. Known for his strength, loyalty, and devotion to Lord Rama, Hanuman is worshipped by millions across India and beyond. This festival is usually celebrated during the full moon (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Chaitra, which falls in March or April.
Why is Hanuman Jayanti celebrated?
Hanuman is seen as a symbol of energy, wisdom, courage, and devotion. People celebrate Hanuman Jayanti to honor his divine birth and to seek his blessings for strength and protection. Devotees believe that by worshipping Hanuman, they can overcome fear, negativity, and challenges in life.
According to mythology, Hanuman was born to Anjana and Kesari. Anjana was an apsara (Angel) who was cursed to live on earth. Her curse would break only after she gave birth to a powerful son. Through deep prayers to Lord Shiva, she was blessed with Hanuman. It is believed that Lord Shiva himself took birth as Hanuman to help Lord Rama in his mission.
Hanuman played a major role in the epic Ramayana. He helped Lord Rama find Sita, carried the Sanjeevani mountain to save Lakshmana, and destroyed many demons. His courage and devotion made him a hero and a divine symbol of service and strength.
On this day, devotees visit Hanuman temples, chant the Hanuman Chalisa, offer sweets and flowers, and read stories about his life. Some even observe fasts. Special prayers and processions are held in many parts of India.
