Le Montfort Munnar: From schoolyard to sanctuary

The Le Montfort in Munnar | E.V. Sreekumar

The black bulbul calls out in the still morning as a pair of sunbirds flit between flowering shrubs. From the small sit-out of our room at Le Montfort, nestled in the undulating greens of Munnar, the sounds of nature mingle softly with the distant hum of construction—a reminder that this charming resort, once a convent school, is still evolving into its fullest self.

We arrived at Le Montfort Resort after a direct booking through their Kochi office. The process was prompt and professional—refreshing in its clarity. We chose to bypass travel portals and were rewarded with a detailed phone briefing, something rarely experienced in these digital-first times. Though we wish they had also warned us about the roadwork just before the resort—a stretch of bumpy terrain that broke the calm of our expectations—it was a minor distraction in an otherwise smooth welcome.

A past reimagined

There’s something inherently heartwarming about a school-turned-resort. You can almost hear the laughter that once echoed through its corridors. Le Montfort has gracefully held on to this legacy while embracing modern comforts. The reception is unassuming yet warm, and the staff—possibly among the most courteous we've encountered—add immense value to the place.

With rooms ranging from ₹6,600 to ₹15,000, there is a range of experiences to choose from. Our room belonged to the higher tier, offering a majestic view of the hills. Lower-deck rooms, however, have their own charm, facing a serene forested patch that looks especially dreamy in the morning mist. All rooms come with balconies, and thoughtful touches such as a fridge, kettle, heater, and stocked mini-eateries at a price.

While the resort’s soul feels old-world and peaceful, the surroundings bear signs of transition. Parts of the property are still under construction, which may slightly dampen the sense of escape for some. It’s not disruptive, but the rustic view from certain angles reminds you that you’re witnessing something mid-bloom.

Dining, done right

The centrally located restaurant is a gathering point for guests, serving a mix of Indian and international dishes. While we found the pricing a bit steep, the quality made up for it. The complimentary breakfast stood out as a true celebration of variety and taste—from soft appams and kadala curry to continental fare with flaky croissants and fresh fruits. It’s a spread designed to please both Indian palates and global travellers.

The service here, too, is impressive. The waitstaff exudes quiet efficiency, and the manager makes it a point to engage with guests without being intrusive. Meals feel personal, not just transactional.

In and around the resort

One of the most distinctive and rare offerings at Le Montfort is its very own helipad—a feature that sets it apart from almost any other resort in Munnar. For those who value convenience or wish to make an entrance in style, the resort offers a helicopter transfer service directly from Kochi. It’s an indulgence that speaks to both efficiency and grandeur, and could particularly appeal to high-profile guests or those seeking a quick escape into the hills.

The swimming pool, tucked within the heart of the property, is a favourite for families and couples alike. However, it’s not the place for a romantic dip if the resort is full—limited seating and energetic children can change the vibe quickly. The property also houses a small hall for functions, and there’s ample parking for those driving in.

We tried the cycles offered for a quick ride around. There were only three—functional, but in need of maintenance. A bit more investment here could enhance the experience.

Despite being in Munnar, it was unseasonably warm during our visit. We were glad we opted for an air-conditioned room. It’s a small detail but one that could affect comfort levels, especially if you’re planning an off-season stay.

Watch your step

The landscape surrounding the property is beautiful, with trees, terraces, and mist rolling in as the sun sets. But parents should note: There are some unprotected cliffs within the resort’s boundaries. While adventurous children may find this thrilling, supervision is essential.

The farewell

Check-out was just as smooth as arrival. In a thoughtful touch, the staff called us the next day to ask if everything had gone well—a simple gesture that cemented our good impressions.

The evolving heart of Munnar

Le Montfort doesn’t try too hard to impress, and that’s part of its charm. It lets its history, staff, and the natural beauty around it do the talking. The construction is a reality, yes, but also a sign that this place is not stagnant—it’s growing, just like its guests do during a good holiday. What it offers today is already worth experiencing; what it will become tomorrow might be even better.
