Fear of World War 3 haunts Europe, authorities urge citizens to keep…, is Russia planning an attack?

London: After France, another European country, Britain, has urged its citizens to keep a survival kit ready to stay alive for 72 hours. The country fears that its vital gas pipeline may be attacked, similar to what happened to Germany’s Nord Stream pipeline in 2022. Such an attack could worsen the situation, as Britain receives about 40 percent of its gas from Norway, imported through a massive 700-mile-long pipeline called Langeled.

This giant pipeline stretches from the Nyhamna gas processing plant on Norway’s Gossa Island to the Easington Gas Terminal in County Durham. If it is attacked, the supply of 40 percent of the gas reaching Britain would immediately be cut off.

Britain is threatened because a Russian spy ship named Yantar has been seen eyeing its underwater energy infrastructure in the North Sea in recent months. As per reports, Yantar is capable of sending a submarine up to 20,000 feet underwater that can blow up pipelines.

According to a report by British newspaper Daily Star that quoted government sources saying, “We know that the Russians are active in the North Sea and they have the ability to break our energy relations.” The official also said that “We need to become more self-reliant and that too quickly. People should be prepared for all situations.”

Is Europe preparing for World War?

Before Britain, France has also asked its people to keep survival kits ready. It is also issuing guidelines to save lives in case of a nuclear attack. The security chiefs of the European Union also advised the European Union countries to keep a three-day survival kit ready in case of an attack on energy systems by Russia. And now Britain has also been called upon to do the same.

Emergency preparedness guidelines recommend stocking non-perishable food (water, canned goods), essential medicines, a battery-operated radio, flashlight, identification, and a multi-tool knife. This is particularly relevant given Britain’s declining self-sufficiency due to its transition to net-zero energy and the closure of domestic power plants, increasing its reliance on foreign energy sources.

Apart from this, British Army Chief General Patrick Sanders has recently warned that in view of the increasing tension with countries like Russia, China, Iran and North Korea, Britain should be prepared for war in the next three years.
