This Amitabh Bachchan’s flop film made audience angry, fans damaged theatres, movie was re-dubbed, lead actors were…, film was…
When Amitabh Bachchan stared out, he wasn’t critically acclaimed and had a hard time finding work too. It was only hard word, consistency that eventually got him the aura he upholds now. He is Big B for a reason. He too has had his share of flop films. Among the many movies that failed at the box office, there was one script that shas interesting anecdotes of shooting but the audience did not give it a pass. Theatres were vandalised. That was the effect it had and few things were re-done to make to the taste of their audience and fans.
This Yash Raj film was reportedly loosely inspired from a Hollywood movie as well. The name of the movie is ‘Agneepath’.
Amitabh Bachchan starrer ‘Agneepath’ was released in 1990. It featured Mithun Chakraborty, Madhvi, Danny Denzongpa, Neelam, Alok Nath, among other actors. Produced by Yash Johar and directed by Mukul S. Anand, the film was inspired by another movie titled ‘Scarface’ and had few paralles with ‘Godfather II’.
When Amitabh Bachchan Re-Dubbed His Character
Fans can be frantic. After the release of the film, Big Bs’s fans did not like the concept and voice of ‘Vijay Deenanath Chauhan’. The anger went to an extent that furious fans damaged theatres, tore the seats as a sign of their disappointment in the movie. Pertaining to this, Amitabh Bachchan revealaed why he re-dubbed the character.
During one of the episodes of reality quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati, Big B shared the anecdote with Citadel: Honey Bunny team- Raj & DK with Varun Dhawan. He said, ” ll tell you a fact, some things are unplanned. On the first day of shooting, I still hadn’t figured out how to portray him. I was in the makeup room and called Mukul Anand and suggested giving Vijay a distinct, deep voice. He agreed, and that’s how we decided on it.”
Amitabh went on to add, “There was a man who used to visit Kalyanji-Anandji’s home with a similar heavy tone, so I thought, why not model Vijay’s voice after that? Later, I found out that man came from an underground background, which fit the essence of Vijay’s character perfectly. So, the character’s first shot was inspired by him. When the movie released, though, the producer called to say theatres were having issues. Audiences were tearing up seats and telling the sound department, ‘This doesn’t sound like Amitabh; fix the sound system!’ So, to address it, I had to re-dub the whole film in my normal voice. But that initial voice was very impactful.”
‘Agneepath’ wasn’t acclaimed a the time of release but eventually garnered the appreciation it deserved. As tribute o his father, Karan Johar made another ‘Agneeptah’ in 2012 that featured Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Sanjay Dutt in lead roles.
