This 2 hour 13 minute film is India’s biggest disaster, budget was Rs 150 crore, earned only Rs 15 crore, even Amitabh Bachchan couldn’t…, the film is…

High-budget films doesn’t always guarantee success. The failure of one such film serves as a stark reminder and a big one at that. We are talking about Vikas Bahl’s action-thriller Ganpath, starring Tiger Shroff, Kriti Sanon and Amitabh Bachchan. The film turned out to be a box-office disaster and director himself was confused that why he made such a mega-budget movie.

Vikas Bahl on Ganpath’s failure

In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Vikas Bahl opened up about having doubts while writing the film. The Queen hitmaker recalled, “Every second of this journey I felt “kyun ye panga le liya (why did I get into this)’. I thought I could have stayed in my comfort zone.” Vikas noted that he had nervousness while making the film, but said that is considered essential for a good product. He said, “I always want to be a student. That nervousness is required to learn. That learning could be technical or emotional but you need to keep on doing that. And there the nervousness and doubt come in. In this film, that feeling didn’t go away for even a day.”

Ganpath’s box office collection

Made on a whopping budget of Rs 200 crore, the film managed to earn just Rs 12 crore nett during its theatrical run. Ganpath was criticised for its directionless story and incoherent vision. The overseas collection was also poor, earning just 6% of the production cost, and giving 94% loss overall. Despite being released on a holiday, the film failed to attract audience and flopped terribly at the box office.

Bankrolled by Jackky Bhagnani, the film’s storyline features a fearless boy named Ganpath, who is on a mission to take down a powerful criminal empire that rules the city with fear. He becomes a symbol of hope for the oppressed in their darkest times.
