Two held after exchange of gunfire in Kurukshetra

The CIA-1 unit of the Kurukshetra police nabbed two miscreants after a brief exchange of gunfire and seized two country-made weapons and 13 cartridges from their possession on Friday.

The accused have been identified as Abhijot, alias Abhi, a resident of Kurukshetra, and Sonu of Patiala. Both accused suffered bullet injuries during gunfight and would be produced before a court on Saturday.

The accused were allegedly planning to target a businessman in order to extort money. A letter regarding the extortion was also recovered from them.

CIA-1 in-charge Surinder Kumar said they received a tip-off that two armed miscreants were roaming on a two-wheeler. He said when the police team reached near Sharifgarh village and signalled the miscreants to stop for inspection, they opened fire at cops.

In retaliation, police personnel also opened fire in which both accused suffered bullet injuries on their legs. They were taken to Shahabad Community Health Centre from where they were referred to Lok Nayak Jai Parkash District Civil Hospital.

About the links of the accused with any gang, the CIA-1 in-charge said, “The accused are being treated at the hospital. After getting them discharged, we will seek their custody to bring out the truth.”

Kurukshetra SP Varun Singla, said, “We are keeping tabs on miscreants to maintain law and order in the district. Their criminal records are being verified and appropriate action will be taken against them.”

Expressing concern over the rising incidents of firing, Thanesar MLA Ashok Arora said, “The law and order situation has deteriorated in the district. Incidents of firing and extortion are on the rise and people are living in fear. The miscreants are roaming freely and have no fear of police. The government should act sternly against anti-social elements.”
