Nose pin unravels woman’s murder mystery, leads to husband’s arrest

Violence before death: Autopsy report

The postmortem examination revealed that the victim had died several days prior to the recovery of the body. Injuries to her face and head pointed to violence before her death.

A seemingly insignificant nose pin proved pivotal in uncovering the identity of a murdered woman and unmasking her killer — her husband — who had allegedly strangled her with a cable wire, wrapped the body in a bedsheet, and dumped it in a drain, the police revealed on Friday.

According to officials, Anil Kumar, a property dealer, is accused of orchestrating the murder with the help of the family’s domestic worker, Shiv Shankar.

“The body of Seema Singh (47) was discovered on March 15 in the Najafgarh drain,” said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) in a statement. “It was wrapped in a bedsheet, bound with cable wire and weighed down with a heavy stone.”

Initially, investigators struggled to identify the victim. The breakthrough came when they examined a gold nose pin on the body. Its hallmark led them to the manufacturer, ultimately allowing the police to confirm her identity. A sketch shared on social media caught the attention of a relative, who contacted the authorities and confirmed that the deceased was Seema Singh, the DCP said.

Following this, an FIR was registered at the Chhawla police station and teams were formed to apprehend the suspects. Shiv Shankar was eventually located and taken into custody.

During interrogation, he reportedly confessed that he and Anil Kumar had strangled Seema on March 11 at their house in Sector 10, Dwarka. They later disposed of her body in an attempt to mislead investigators and avoid suspicion. Kumar misled Seema’s family, claiming that she had stormed out of the house following an argument and never returned. He then went into hiding.

Investigators discovered that he had been living with another woman in Gurugram. Seema’s family had filed a missing person report at Chhatarpur police station, days before her body was found.

The police noted marital discord between the couple and suspect that the motive may stem from deeper personal and domestic conflicts. At the time of her disappearance, Seema was last seen with her younger son and carrying her handbag, which was later recovered from her husband’s possession. The investigators are now probing whether the woman with whom Kumar was cohabiting played any role in the crime.
