Who is Benu Gopal Bangur?
Born in a Marwari family in Rajasthan on January 1, 1931, Benu Gopal Bangur attended the University of Calcutta where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Commerce. After his graduation, Benu Gopal Bangur joined the family business, which was established by his grandfather, Mungee Ram Bangur, a Calcutta stockbroker, and his brother Ram Coowar Bangur, in the late 19th century.
During the 1950s and 60s, the Bangur business empire emerged as the one of the most prominent conglomerates in India, expanding its interests into diverse sectors, and in 1979, Benu Gopal Bangur founded Shree Cement in Beawar, Rajasthan, which is now headquartered in West Bengal capital, Kolkata.
Over the years, Shree Cement has grown into India’s third-largest cement producer and the second-largest cement company by market capitalisation. Benu Gopal Bangur steered Shree Cement to new heights, before handing over the reins of the company to his son, Hari Mohan Bangur, in 1990.
In October 2022, Benu Gopal Bangur, 94, stepped down as the Chairman of Shree Cement, handing over the complete control of the cement giant to his son. Hari’s son, Prashant Bangur, who holds an MBA in finance and logistics from the prestigious Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, and a Mathematics Honours degree from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, serves as the Vice-Chairman of Shree Cement.

Following his retirement, Benu Gopal Bangur lives in a lavish mansion in Kolkata, which is spread over 51,000 square feet area, and boasts top-of-the-line amenities, including a private theatre, and a fully-stacked gym. The 94-year-old has a net worth of $8 billion, as of April 11, 2025, making him one of the richest men in India, and the 362nd wealthiest globally, according to Forbes.
