Tourists warned against going close to riverbeds in Lahaul

In the wake of the recent drowning incident involving two youths from Jharkhand in the Chandra River, the Lahaul-Spiti district administration has issued a strict advisory barring tourists from going close to riverbeds and entering water streams in the region. The drowning incident has raised serious concerns about public safety as the summer tourist season gets underway.

Thousands of tourists rush to the Lahaul valley during the summer months, often venturing dangerously close to riverbanks for recreation, photography and clicking selfies. These activities, however, pose serious risks due to strong currents and slippery rocks, especially with rising water levels caused by melting snow.

To curb such accidents, the district administration has invoked Section 111 of the Himachal Pradesh Police Act, 2007. The tourists found violating the directive could face up to eight days of imprisonment, a fine ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000, or both.

The district authorities have urged tourists to act in a responsible manner and not risk their lives for such thrills. The police have intensified surveillance across key tourist spots and riversides and officials are continuously monitoring tourist activity to ensure compliance with the advisory.
