Tahawwur Rana in NIA custody: Multiple-layer digital security, 24-hour surveillance of two cameras… how the 26/11 accused is being kept in India

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case has been kept in a cell on the ground floor of the NIA headquarters which is equipped with CCTV cameras. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday evening formally arrested Rana, who was brought to India after being “successfully extradited” from the US.

What is his cell like?

He has also got a bed in this cell which is placed on the floor. The size of the cell is about 14/14 which has an attached bathroom. This cell has multiple layer digital security along with 24 hour security by guards. Taking security reasons into consideration only 12 NIA officers are allowed to enter this cell.

Rana’s movement in the NIA headquarters will be kept to a minimum and he will be interrogated under the surveillance of two cameras with recording.

Procedure of interrogation

This interrogation will start from today and breaks will be given in between. At least eight agencies have requested NIA to question Rana. Apart from that, Rana will be given food and all other essentials inside this cell. After the meeting of NIA officials today, interrogation of Rana will begin and this entire interrogation will be done in front of the camera.

Rana, 64, is a Pakistan-born Canadian national and close associate of one of the main conspirators of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani, a US citizen. Rana was brought to India after his last-ditch attempt to evade extradition failed as the US Supreme Court justices rejected his application.
