The world is filled with various strange phenomena, but do you know about the most astonishing event that happens each year in Canada’s Manitoba province? Well, the Narcisse Snake Dens are home to the largest gathering of snakes on the planet. Every year, nearly 75,000 red-sided garter snakes emerge and cluster in limestone sinkholes, seeking refuge from the harsh winter cold and beginning their seasonal mating rituals.

This region experiences extreme cold during winters, with temperatures dropping as low as -45°C, yet the snakes manage to survive. The reason lies in the ancient natural sinkholes, which remain warm from within and provide a safe haven for the snakes to hibernate. These sinkholes are about the size of a room, but they shelter thousands of snakes at once, creating a sight that feels nothing short of a miracle.

As per an NDTV report, a recent study suggests that snakes exhibit certain social behaviors, much like some social animals. For instance, Butler’s garter snakes show signs of social structure based on age and gender. The red-sided garter snakes found in the Narcisse region actually belong to the species Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis, which is commonly found across North America. However, Manitoba’s Interlake region offers the ideal conditions for them to hibernate safely during the harsh winters.
