BKS urges fair relief for farmers hit by Bilaspur-Leh rail project

The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) Prant Mantri Hariram has called upon the Central Government and the Railway Ministry to ensure that farmers’ welfare is prioritised during the construction of the Bilaspur-Leh railway line. The strategically vital infrastructure project, aimed at boosting regional connectivity and national security, has already seen initial progress with the installation of ‘burgis’ (pillars) in the district.

However, Hariram expressed deep concerns about the potential displacement of farmers due to land acquisition, emphasising the need for fair and humane treatment.

Hariram underscored that farmers whose fertile agricultural lands are acquired must be given adequate compensation and proper rehabilitation. He said such steps would not only ease their hardships but also encourage them to cooperate willingly in contributing land for this significant national project. He emphasized that a fair and transparent approach would foster trust and goodwill among the farming community.

Recalling past instances, Hariram criticized the inadequate handling of land acquisition during the construction of the four-lane national highway. He alleged that several affected individuals were neither compensated fairly nor rehabilitated properly, leaving them to suffer the negative consequences of development without recognition or support. He stressed that the weight of progress must not be borne solely by a few and that those who sacrifice for national development deserve both acknowledgment and justice.

In parallel to his appeal, the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh has launched a district-wide campaign focused on land nutrition and conservation. Running through April 30, the campaign is being conducted via village-level committees and aims to spread awareness among farmers about sustainable agricultural practices. Hariram raised concerns over the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, which he said have poisoned the soil, reduced yields, and harmed long-term land productivity. He emphasized the urgent need to restore soil health for future generations.

Supporting these views, Dr Sher Singh, also present at the meeting, advocated for integrating natural farming methods with modern techniques. He stated that a balance between traditional wisdom and innovation is essential to preserve soil fertility and produce nutritious crops. Singh added that sustainable farming is not just an environmental necessity but a societal one as well.

While the Bilaspur-Leh railway line is poised to transform regional connectivity, the BKS has urged authorities to ensure that development is inclusive and considerate. Hariram’s appeal highlights the importance of balancing national infrastructure goals with the rights and well-being of farmers who form the backbone of

the country.
