Elphinstone Bridge Closure: Mumbai Traffic Police Invite Suggestions Or Objections To Proposed Diversions; Here's How You Can Send Yours

Mumbai: The Mumbai Traffic Police on Tuesday issued a draft notification announcing traffic diversions and regulations that will be enforced after the proposed demolition of the 125-year-old Elphinstone Bridge. The demolition, proposed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is likely to take place after April 10.

How Can You Send Your Suggestions Or Objections?

Citizens have been invited to send their suggestions or objections regarding the proposed traffic arrangements. Those wishing to raise concerns can email the Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) at addiep.traffic@mahapolice.gov.in by April 13, 2025.

If no objections are received, the bridge will be closed for demolition within five to six days. In case objections are submitted, the authorities will review them before deciding on further action.

The closure of this crucial east-west connector is expected to majorly affect traffic in the Parel area, which already experiences high congestion. The region is home to prominent hospitals such as Tata Memorial Hospital and KEM Hospital. Over the years, redevelopment of old mill lands into malls and office complexes has further increased traffic density in the locality.

Alternate Routes Provided For Motorists

To avoid disruption and ensure public safety, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Suburban, Traffic) Pradip Chavan has outlined alternate routes. Vehicles will be diverted via the Tilak Bridge in Dadar and the Currey Road Bridge during the closure.

For pedestrians, the existing foot overbridge near Parel Station will be designated as a non-ticketed zone, ensuring continuous access. Additionally, a new foot overbridge near Prabhadevi Station is under construction and is expected to open soon.

Emergency Services To Be On Standby On Either Sides Of Bridge

Emergency arrangements have also been made. One ambulance will be stationed at the west side of Prabhadevi Railway Station’s footbridge, while another will be available at the east side of Parel Railway Station. Wheelchairs will also be provided for patients during the transition period.

About New Elphinstone Bridge

The current Elphinstone Bridge, which is only 13 metres wide with 1.5 lanes in each direction, will be replaced by a four-lane double-decker bridge. The lower deck will connect Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road and Senapati Bapat Road, functioning as the replacement for the old bridge.

The upper deck will become part of the 4.5-km-long Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector, a signal-free stretch linking the Bandra-Worli Sea Link to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, also known as Atal Setu. So far, 60 per cent of the connector’s construction has been completed.
