Justice Sanjeev Kumar To Takeover As Acting Chief Justice Of J&K and Ladakh High Court

NEW DELHI, Apr 9: The Central government on Wednesday issued a notification for appointment of Justice Sanjeev Kumar as the acting Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.

J&K and Ladakh High Court’s present Chief Justice, Justice Tashi Rabistan, retires today.
“In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjeev Kumar, Judge of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, to perform the duties of office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 10.04.2025 consequent upon the retirement of Shri Justice Tashi Rabastan, Chief Justice, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court on 09.04.2025,” the Union Law Ministry said in a notification.
Justice Kumar was born on April 8 in 1966 in Kathua district and studied law at University of Jammu in 1988. He enrolled as an advocate in 1989.
He practised mainly before the High Court and had more than two hundred reported judgments to his credit before he was elevated to the Bench in June 2017.
Pertinently, Supreme Court Collegium has already recommended that Justice Arun Palli of Punjab and Haryana High Court be appointed as the Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
The recommendation was made following a meeting of the Collegium on April 04.
“The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on 4th April, 2025 has recommended appointment of Mr. Justice Arun Palli, Judge, High Court of Punjab & Haryana, as Chief Justice of High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh,” the top court said in a statement.
Justice Palli’s elevation has not yet been cleared by the Union government. (barandbench)
