When you watch a horror films in the theater, the background score and theatre sound system have a major value addition to the plot, even when not so eerie. But, if the plot keeps you hooked while watching at home even at the slightest jump scare, it is a sign of a good movie. If you are looking for a good sci-fi , supernatural storyline, this 2 hour 22 minutes long film can be added on your watchlist.

This Malayalam film is a sci-fi horror film that has hints of dark comedy as well. The name of the film is ‘Churuli’. It loosely translates to ‘spiral’. The plot essentially traces the essence if the name as the twists and turns only to a spiral that keeps you pondering. It was released in 2021 and is directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery. It is reportedly based on Vinoy Thomas’s short story “Kaligeminarile Kuttavalikal” from his book “Mullaranjanam”.

The film ‘Churuli’ gfeatures Vinay Forrt, Chemban Vinod Jose, Joju George, Soubin Shahir and Jaffar Idukki among others. The palpable setting, excellent performance and rawness of characters made it more real barring the horror elements, ofcourse. The storyline is awarded 7 star rating on IMDb.

According to some reviews, the gripping narrative and engrossing scenes not only send chilld down the spine but some regard it to beat ‘Pushpa’ or ‘KGF’ as well! Two undercover cops who go in search of a fugitive enter another dimension occupied by uncivilized residents who are crass and rude. There, the two men get stuck in an apparent time loop as inexplicable events begin to occur.

The film was made in 19 days as per a report by the IMDb just before COVID-19 pandemic hit. Word has it that if it is was not for the deadly pandemic, the director had plans to touch base with virtual reality for this film as well.  ‘Churuli’  had it’s world premiere at the Thiruvananthapuram edition of The 25th International Film Festival of Kerala. It is currently streaming in Sony Liv.
