Shardul Thakur creates UNWANTED record, bowls joint-largest over in IPL history
New Delhi: During Tuesday’s IPL match between Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders in Kolkata, Shardul Thakur bowled a record-tying 11-ball over, the longest in IPL history.
With five consecutive wide deliveries to begin his over, Thakur’s spell left KKR captain Rishabh Pant visibly perplexed. The medium-pace bowler was introduced to counter the threat posed by KKR’s Ajinkya Rahane, who had already scored a significant fifty during a strong chase.
Mumbai’s fast bowler dismissed Ajinkya Rahane on the last ball of his over, with Rahane mistiming a full toss to Pooran at short cover. The bowler finished with figures of 2 for 52 from four overs, having also dismissed Andre Russell.
Kolkata’s strong start, fueled by Rahane and Narine’s quick 90-1 score in the powerplay, kept them ahead of the required run rate for a significant portion of the innings. Narine’s contribution included a rapid 30 runs from just 13 balls, exploiting inconsistent bowling from Lucknow’s pace attack.
Rahane and Iyer’s successful 71-run stand was ended by Lucknow’s sudden dismissal of four batsmen, hindering the team’s pursuit of the target.
Shardul Thakur began the 13th over by bowling five consecutive wide balls. However, his poor start culminated in Rahane’s dismissal, caught at cover after mistiming a full toss.
Lucknow Super Giants regained the advantage after a quick succession of wickets. Akash Deep dismissed Shreyas Iyer for 45 runs in the 16th over, triggering a collapse of three wickets in nine balls. This momentum shift was further solidified by Thakur’s dismissal of Andre Russell via a full toss in his final over.
Kolkata’s loss put the onus on Rinku Singh, whose strong but ultimately insufficient 38 runs from 15 balls couldn’t secure victory.
Markram and Marsh’s 99-run opening partnership, achieved in just 62 balls, set the stage for a Sunrisers Hyderabad victory against Kolkata, further fueled by Pooran’s aggressive batting.
Harshit Rana bowled Markram out with a full delivery that straightened and hit the stumps.
Marsh and Pooran powered a strong batting performance. Marsh hit eleven sixes and fours, while Pooran contributed a rapid 71 runs from just 30 balls before being dismissed.
Pooran’s quick 50 runs, achieved from only 21 balls with eight fours and sixes, extended his dominant position atop the IPL batting rankings.
Lucknow’s cricket team secured their third victory, resulting in Kolkata’s third loss. The match, originally scheduled for Sunday, was postponed at the Kolkata police’s request because of local religious celebrations.
