Renewable energy can fuel 35 mn jobs

India’s distributed renewable energy (DRE) market is valued at $53 billion, with the potential to create 35 million green jobs by 2047, Global Off-Grid Lighting Association (GOGLA), the global association for the off-grid solar energy industry, said.

GOGLA along with Good Energies and IKEA Foundation organised the South Asia Forum for Distributed Energy (SAFDE) on Tuesday with an aim to accelerate investments and tie-ups in the segment.

Ashish Khanna, Director General, International Solar Alliance said, “We need to enable private sector investments in driving technology and innovation for DRE, while the Government focuses on developing the regulatory framework and results-based financing to make these solutions affordable for the poor.”

He added, “Each country and their context is different. Let’s not have one size fits all. The needs of a developing country are different. Therefore, talking to communities, understanding what they really need, and then contextualising a private sector distribution is extremely critical.”

DRE adoption is projected to reduce 0.2 million tonnes of carbon emissions by 2030.

Sarah Malm, Executive Director, GOGLA, said, “Distributed renewable energy is bringing change and powering local economies, enhancing climate resilience.”
