Eight years on, UT cop held guilty in graft case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has convicted Head Constable Raj Kumar of Chandigarh Police in a corruption case registered eight years ago. The court will pronounce the quantum of sentence on April 15.
The CBI had arrested the accused in January 2017 while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from the complainant, Anil Kumar of Ram Darbar. The agency had claimed that the cop, who was posted at the Sector 31 police station, was demanding the bribe from the complainant to let him off in an assault case.
It claimed that the police had received a complaint of assault against Anil Kumar. A woman from his locality had filed a complaint against him and the accused cop was tasked with the investigation into the complaint.
When Anil Kumar visited the police station, the cop demanded Rs 20,000 in order to let him off.
The CBI claimed that since the complainant did not want to give the bribe, he approached the agency. Its sleuths laid a trap and arrested Raj Kumar while accepting the bribe.
In his complaint, Anil Kumar had stated that Raj Kumar had called him to deliver the money after the deal was struck for Rs 5,000. The cop was booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
After completion of the investigation, the police filed a challan in the court. Finding sufficient evidence on record, the accused was chargesheeted under Sections 7 and 13 (1) D of the Prevention of the Corruption Act.
