Esther Victoria Abraham, whose stage name was Pramila. When she won the Miss India crown in 1947, she was 31 years old. She was already the mother of four children and was carrying the fifth child in her womb. Another interesting fact is that Pramila’s daughter Naqi Jahan also won the Miss India crown in 1967. They are the only mother-daughter duo who have set this record.
Let’s start the story of Esther Victoria Abraham from the beginning. She was born in Kolkata in 1916. She comes from a Baghdadi Jewish family. Like her father, Pramila also married twice. When she was 17 years old, she first married Maniklal Dangi, a Hindu Marwari gentleman. A son was also born from this marriage. But then this marriage broke. At the age of 22, Pramila married Mughal-e-Azam actor Syed Hassan Ali Zaidi for the second time. After marriage, Esther Victoria Abraham had to give up Judaism. She accepted Islam.
Esther Victoria Abraham alias Pramila, who became famous as Pramila, had four children from her second marriage. But this marriage also got ruined during the partition of India and Pakistan. Zaidi returned to Pakistan and Pramila decided not to leave India. She made films while living in Mumbai. She handled production and worked a lot. Pramila’s son Haider Ali sang a song for Hrithik Roshan’s Jodha Akbar film in 2008.
Pramila, who also became the first producer started her film career as a dancer in Parsi theatre. Once it happened that Pramila had gone to her sister’s house in Bombay to celebrate holidays. Here, famous director Ardeshir Irani noticed her and immediately offered her a film. Then she debuted in the year 1935. Later, she also became famous as a stuntwoman in 30 films like Basant, Bijli, and Ulti Ganga. Not only this, but later Pramila made her own production house and made 16 films. She had to go to jail once. She was accused of spying for Pakistan. It is said that Pramila was sent to jail by Morarji Desai. Because she used to visit Pakistan a lot at that time. She said goodbye to this world on 6 August 2006 at the age of about 90.
