Maharashtra Infra News: Kashedi Tunnel On Mumbai-Goa Highway Continues To Leak Despite Costly Repairs

Mumbai: The Kashedi tunnel on the Mumbai-Goa National Highway continues to struggle with severe water leakage issues, despite significant financial investment in repairs. Although both lanes are open to traffic, leakage has been a persistent problem since its inception.

The National Highways Construction Department acknowledges these challenges but remains hopeful about resolving the issue within two months. Continuous repair efforts have not proven effective, causing frustration among motorists.

Even in summer, water infiltration persists, indicating the seriousness of the situation. The contractor is consulting experts for solutions, but previous investments, including essential 'grouting' technology aimed at preventing seepage, have not been appropriately implemented. A recent inspection by Prof. S.K. from Mumbai IIT provided additional insights, which have also failed to solve the problem.

With the new lane from Mumbai to Goa also experiencing leaks, caution is advised for drivers. The National Highways Department reports that nearly 80% of repairs are complete and expresses confidence in stopping the leaks soon.

However, both motorists and authorities remain skeptical about achieving this within the promised timeline. The ongoing water leakage issues have escalated, and the department is actively working on preventive measures. Despite spending crores of rupees, the problem persists, highlighting a need for accountability from the contractor involved, as their efforts, alongside expert advice, have not effectively resolved the situation.

The much-anticipated Mumbai-Goa Highway project was been in development for more than 14 years, leading to irritation among travelers and political discussions. In several areas, the current road is in bad shape, causing many Mumbaikars to opt for the longer Satara route to Goa instead.
