'I Don't Take It Personally': Mawra Hocane Reacts To Controversy Over Fawad Khan & Pakistani Actors' Bollywood Comeback

Pakistani actress Mawra Hocane, best known for starring opposite Harshvardhan Rane in Sanam Teri Kasam, has reacted to the controversy surrounding the comeback of Pakistani artists in India. For those unversed, it began after the teaser of Vaani Kapoor and Pakistani actor Fawad Khan's Bollywood film Abir Gulaal was unveiled and the film's release date was announced by the makers.

For those unversed, Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) opposed the film's release in India and also threatened those who are supporting the actors.

In an interview with ETimes, Mawra opened up about her views on the objections to Pakistani artists working in Indian films.

She said, "I don't take it personally. This is how the world works, right? I truly believe if it's meant to happen, it will. I block the noise around my work. I love to do what I do. So, I do not let these things affect me. It is truly the producer’s headache, which is sad, but it is their problem."

Mawra further said, "If I invest my mind into thinking, ‘Oh, what’s going to happen’, I will always be restless."

When asked if she spoke to Fawad in recent times, the actress replied, "When my colleagues do well, we definitely reach out to each other. We wish each other luck. I truly wish the best for everyone. I hope this film (Abir Gulaal) does really well."

Abir Gulaal controversy

Soon after the film's teaser was shared, MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar warned that his party will not allow the film to be screened in Maharashtra.

A few days back, he wrote on X, "No matter how many times we've said that Pakistani artists' films will not be allowed to release in India, some rotten apples still crop up. In such cases, it will be up to MNS Sainiks to throw them in the trash - and we will do it, and continue to do so."

"The film Abir Gulal will not be allowed to release in India, period. Those who wish to support Pakistani artists can do so, but remember, you are up against us," Ameya added.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam had also commented on the controversy, stating that Indian audiences do not prefer watching films featuring Pakistani artists. He further advised Pakistani actors to focus on their own industry rather than seeking opportunities in India.

Veteran filmmaker and President of the Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association, Ashoke Pandit, criticised Fawad and said that there will be widespread protests if the makers plan to release Abir Gulaal in India.

About Fawad and Vaani's Abir Gulaal

The teaser of Abir Gulal, unveiled on April 1, features a romantic moment between Fawad and Vaani, where the actor is seen singing to the actress inside a car stuck in London traffic on a rainy evening.

Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, the film follows the journey of two individuals who unintentionally help each other heal, with love blossoming as an unexpected consequence. The film, shot in the UK, is set for release on May 9, 2025.
