6-Year-Old Loses Vision After Being Struck By Stick Thrown By Teacher; 6 Booked
A year after suffering an eye injury in his classroom, a six-year-old boy has tragically lost vision in his right eye, allegedly due to a teacher's reckless action. Authorities have now registered a case against the teacher and five others, including education officials, in connection with the incident.
The boy, Yeshwant, was a Class 1 student at a government school in Chintamani taluk when the incident occurred on March 6, 2024. According to police, his teacher, the teacher, Saraswathi, allegedly threw a stick to discipline students, which accidentally struck Yeshwant in the eye, reported The New Indian Express.
Initially, the severity of the injury wasn’t fully understood by his family. However, as the child’s condition deteriorated in the days that followed, he was taken to a local ophthalmologist, who referred him to the district hospital. Despite undergoing two surgeries at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru in December, the damage remained irreversible.
Eventually, a private hospital confirmed the worst: the child had permanently lost vision in his right eye.
Legal Action
In a disturbing turn, five other individuals, including the taluk block education officer, have also been named in the case for allegedly threatening the boy’s parents and attempting to suppress the matter.
Outraged by the incident and lack of action, family members and local residents staged a protest outside the Batlahalli police station on Sunday evening. This prompted police to take action and formally register a case.
"A complaint was received from the child’s parents, and we’ve filed a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to physical assault, and provisions under the Juvenile Justice Act," a senior police official confirmed, as per PTI.
The case has reignited concerns over student safety and accountability within school systems, particularly in rural areas.
