Will Rohit Sharma Have Stand Named After Him At Wankhede? MCA To Honour Team India Skipper, Says Report

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is likely to name a stand at Wankhede Stadium after Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma. According to Indian Express reports, the MCA has been discussing various proposals to honour former presidents and cricket legends by naming stands and areas of the stadium after them.

The report further states that alongside Rohit names like Vilasrao Deshmukh, late India captain Ajit Wadekar, late Eknath Solkar, late Dilip Sardesai, late Padmakar Shivalkar, former India captain Diana Edulji and Sharad Pawar have also emerged.

According to the report, MCA’s apex council reportedly considered naming a stand after Rohit in their recent meeting. Currently, the East Stand is named after Sunil Gavaskar, the West Stand after Vijay Merchant, and the North Stand after Sachin Tendulkar and Dilip Vengsarkar. The media gallery is dedicated to Bal Thackeray, while a statue of Sachin Tendulkar has also been installed at the stadium. The MCA’s Grand Stand, located above the president's box, is the likely candidate to be named in honor of Rohit Sharma.

MCA has already named its Indoor academy in Bandra followed by its upcoming library after Pawar, a BCCI and ICC president. However, some club members want a stand to be named after him inside the stadium.

Shah Alam Shaik, a former MCA office-bearer, said, “We have requested MCA to name one of the bridges after former India womens captain Diana Edulji. She has served India and Mumbai cricket for a long time now. Let’s see if MCA members approve our suggestion,”

MCA Rules To approve the names

According to the report, MCA rules says that the naming of any stand needs the AGM’s approval which is scheduled to take place on April 15 and will take a call on all these requests made.
