Allowance Update: Big decision of the central government! Now employees will get this allowance twice a year; check complete details here
Allowance Update: The central government has now decided to give the uniform allowance on a pro-rata basis instead of once a year. According to the circular dated 24 March 2025, new employees will get the allowance according to their tenure. It can be Rs 20,000 or Rs 10,000 annually, which is decided according to the post and service.
Uniform allowance: The Finance Ministry has announced that now the uniform allowance will be given to the central government employees twice a year instead of once. This decision has been taken to resolve an issue that has been arising for a long time. The government has also implemented the pro-rata (proportional) payment system, so that all employees can get equal allowance according to their service period. That is, the employees who have joined the job after July will get this allowance according to their tenure. This information has been given by the government in a circular dated 24 March 2025.
It is worth noting that in the 2017 circular it was decided that the uniform allowance would be given only once a year in July. Since then this issue had been a cause of dispute among the central employees. According to a circular issued by the Finance Ministry in August 2017, many other allowances have now been included in the uniform allowance. These include clothing allowance, initial equipment allowance, kit maintenance allowance, clothing (robe) allowance, shoe allowance etc.
Distribution of allowance will be more transparent
According to the report of The Economic Times, Bharat Gangadharan, a lawyer at SKV Law Offices, says that finally after 7 years, the ministry has introduced a pro-rata payment system through a formula for the payment of dress allowance. With this change, the distribution of allowance will now be more uniform and transparent. Also, it will also be clear how much allowance the newly recruited employees will get for the remaining months of the financial year.
How will the amount of allowance be decided
The dress allowance will be paid pro-rata as per the amount / 12 x number of months (from the month of joining government service to June of the next year). That is, this formula will decide how much allowance the new employees will get for the remaining months of the year. Suppose an eligible employee joins the job in August and he has to get a dress allowance of Rs 20,000 annually. According to the given formula, he will get the allowance on a pro-rata basis, which will be Rs 20,000 ÷ 12 × 11 = Rs 18,333. That is, he will get a dress allowance of 18,333 for 11 months from August to June of the next year.
They get Rs 20,000
The uniform allowance given to central government employees has been fixed according to different posts and services. According to the 7th Pay Commission, officers of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and Coast Guard get a dress allowance of Rs 20,000 every year.
