Neglected HPTDC hotels threaten Kangra’s tourism capital dream

The Himachal Pradesh Government, under Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has announced plans to transform Kangra into the “tourism capital” of the state. However, the condition of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) hotels in the region tells a different story. Despite being located in prime tourist destinations like Palampur and McLeodganj, these properties continue to suffer from years of neglect and lack of maintenance.

Hotel T-Bud in Palampur, spread across 20 kanals, is surrounded by deodar and pine forests and offers a tranquil atmosphere ideal for tourists. Yet, the hotel has not seen any major repairs in the past 25 years. The building’s infrastructure, including rooms, washrooms, kitchen, dining area and furniture, is outdated and deteriorating. The tin roof leaks during heavy rains, leading to damp walls. Sanitary fittings are obsolete and none of the rooms are air-conditioned, making it uncomfortable for guests to stay during peak summer temperatures. The hotel’s parking lot is also in poor condition with deep potholes.

Hotel Bhagsu in McLeodganj, another red-brick heritage structure, faces similar issues. Built four decades ago, it too has not undergone any significant renovations. The furniture, curtains and interiors have aged beyond their usable life. With private five-star hotels emerging rapidly in Palampur and Dharamsala, HPTDC’s aging properties struggle to keep up with modern expectations.

Although the government had announced plans to renovate Kangra’s HPTDC properties last year, the shortage of funds stalled the process. A senior HPTDC official revealed that the proposal for renovation was still pending with the state government and would only proceed once funds were sanctioned.

If Kangra is to truly become the tourism capital of Himachal Pradesh, urgent investment and attention are needed to revive and modernise HPTDC’s assets, while ensuring they meet the standards of today’s discerning travellers.
