Experts highlight advances in prenatal care, imaging techniques

A continuing medical education (CME) session on foetal medicine was successfully held in Palampur, organised by Dr Sameer Kapila and Dr Sonali Kapila of Kapila Imaging Centre. The event drew medical professionals from across Kangra, offering valuable insights into foetal diagnostics and the latest advancements in maternal healthcare.

Renowned foetal medicine expert and prenatal diagnosis specialist Dr Vivek Kashyap, along with Dr Sameer Kapila, led the technical sessions. Dr Kapila delivered in-depth presentations, shedding light on cutting-edge imaging technologies and diagnostic techniques that are transforming prenatal care.

The CME underscored the vital role of foetal medicine in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. Experts highlighted how technological advancements are significantly improving outcomes for mothers and newborns. India’s Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) has dropped from 33 to 23 deaths per 1,000 live births, while the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) has declined from 130 per 100,000 live births in 2014-16 to 97 in 2018-20, progress that underscores the importance of prenatal diagnostics and care.

Dr Sameer Kapila, a pioneer in radiology in Himachal Pradesh, completed his MBBS from Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, and his MD in radio diagnosis from Chennai. He served as Senior Resident at PGI Chandigarh and later worked as assistant professor and consultant radiologist at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai. He also completed a fellowship in foetal medicine and advanced ultrasound at Mediscan, Chennai.
