Meaning Of The Name 'Kanta'

The word ‘Kanta’ means ‘beloved’ or ‘dearest’. This Ekadashi fast is especially observed by those who wish to invite love, beauty, and harmony into their lives and relationships. On the other hand, ‘Kamada’ means ‘the one who fulfills desires’.

Mythological Story

According to a story described in the Padma Purana, a Gandharva named Lalit lived in the kingdom of Ratnapura with his wife, Lavanyavati. Lalit used to perform music in the royal court. One day, lost in thoughts of his wife, he made a mistake during his performance. The king, angered by his distraction, cursed him to be born as a demon.

A grief-stricken Lavanyavati sought help from Sage Shringi, who advised her to observe the fast of Kanta Ekadashi with full devotion. She sincerely observed the fast, and through the power of her penance, Lalit was freed from the curse.
