Ahead of Indian markets opening, US President Donald Trump said foreign governments will have to pay “a lot of money” to lift sweeping US tariffs, likening them to “medicine” despite mounting market losses.  

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump indicated he was unconcerned about recent equity declines that have erased nearly US $6 trillion in market value. 

“I don’t want anything to go down. But sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something,” he said.

Meanwhile, India does not plan to retaliate against US President Donald Trump’s 26 per cent tariffs on imports from the country, an Indian government official told Reuters. The Modi administration has examined a clause in Trump’s tariff order that allows exemptions for trading partners “taking significant steps to remedy non‑reciprocal trade arrangements,” the official told Reuters.
