New Delhi: In a significant development in India’s defence sector, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has recently received a big order to manufacture 156 light combat helicopters (LCHs) for the Indian Army and Air Force. This development has created a stir in the defence sector, as HAL will now also join hands with private companies to complete this work within the given deadline.
HAL to Complete the Project with Private Companies
HAL is planning to hand over some of its projects worth about Rs 25,000 crore to private players. The Cabinet Committee on Security has approved the deal of Rs 62,500 crore following the contract that was signed between the Ministry of Defence and HAL. The company is now planning to boost defence production by involving private sector companies in this project.
A Boost To Defence Industry
The major deal will further boost the Indian defence industry. Defence officials told news agency ANI that HAL, in the coming days, will issue tenders to invite private players in the LCh project.
Private Companies Will Do 40% Of The Work
The LCA project, a RS 625 billion initiative, is outsourcing approx 40 percent of its work to private companies, including Larsen & Toubro and Vem Technologies. This strategy, involving the subcontracting of components like the fuselage and wings, aims to bolster India’s defence industrial base across all sectors.
HAL To Build Choppers In Karnataka
Notably, HAL is going to build these helicopters at its Bengaluru and Tumkuru factories in Karnataka. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was present at the delivery of the first rear fuselage for the light combat aircraft (LCA) Mk1A manufactured by private Indian industry, Alpha Tokol Engineering Services Private Limited.
India’s leading aerospace firm, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), currently holds contracts exceeding Rs 200 billion and anticipates securing additional contracts valued at over Rs 70 billion. HAL plans to utilise its Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) production model for upcoming helicopter projects, aiming to accelerate production and lower costs.
