Groom Gets Thrashed In UP For Giving Rs 5,000 During 'Joota Chupai' In Bijnor

A wedding ritual meant to bring joy went wrong in Uttar Pradesh resulting in harassment and thrashing of the groom. The matter escalated when the groom gave Rs 5,000 instead of Rs 50,000 to the bride's family who had his shoes as part of a 'joota chupai' (hiding shoes) ritual during the wedding. 

Muhammad Shabir, the groom had come from Uttarakhand's Chakrata to Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh in a wedding procession with his family on Saturday. As rituals were underway during the wedding, the bride's sister-in-law stole Shabir's shoes and demanded Rs 50,000 to get his footwear back. 

However, the groom gave Rs 5,000 which irked the sister-in-law. Later, some women called out names to Shabir calling him a beggar, reported India Today.

Locked In Room, Beaten With Sticks 

An argument ensued between the two families over Shabir being called a beggar which soon escalated to a fight. According to Shabir's family, they were locked in a room by the bride's family and were beaten up with sticks. 

Meanwhile, the bride's family claimed that the argument turned violent when Shabir's family questioned them about the quality of gold they got as a gift. 

Bride's brother claimed that Shabir's family said they loved money more than the girl when he asked them whom they prioritised more.

Police Action 

The matter was reported to the police and a team reached the spot and spoke with both the parties. Later, both the families reached the  Najibabad police station in Bijnor where they narrated their sequence of events, the Najibabad area officer said.

A settlement was reached by the two parties after the officials came to know about the entire matter. 

"There was a dispute between two parties regarding the ritual of 'joota chupai'. They reached the Najibabad police station to describe the sequence of events. Now, a settlement has been reached between the two families," the official said.
