Mini Shivaratri Fair concludes with promises of development
The annual state-level Mini Shivaratri Fair concluded on April 5 at Jogindernagar in Mandi district with a vibrant closing ceremony. The five-day event, held from April 1 to 5, was attended by a large gathering and featured a rich display of local culture and traditions.
Yadvinder Goma, Minister for Ayush, Law, Youth Services and Sports, graced the occasion as the chief guest. He led the ceremonial welcome of the divine procession of local deities, including Hurang Narayan and Pashakot from the Chauhar Valley. The minister performed traditional rituals at the old fairground and participated in receiving the revered deities, alongside other notable figures such as senior Congress leader and advocate Jeevan Thakur.
Addressing the public, Minister Goma highlighted the state government’s commitment to preserving and promoting Himachal Pradesh’s cultural heritage. He praised the role of fairs and festivals in uplifting local artistes and folk traditions. He emphasised that the development of the Jogindernagar assembly constituency remains a key focus for the state government.
In a significant announcement, the minister declared an allocation of Rs 20 lakh for the renovation and development of the Jogindernagar sports ground. He also sanctioned Rs 51,000 from his discretionary funds for the fair organising committee. Goma commended the efforts of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and the committee for successfully managing the fair, which attracted large crowds and enthusiastic participation.
Earlier, the minister visited various stalls set up by government departments and self-help groups, engaging with exhibitors and appreciating their work.
Congress leader Jeevan Thakur also spoke at the event, thanking the state government for supporting development initiatives in the region and ensuring the fair’s success. SDM Manish Chaudhary, who also serves as the President of the Fair Committee, welcomed the minister and provided a detailed overview of the fair’s planning and execution.
A highlight of the closing ceremony was the prize distribution for a wrestling competition held during the fair. Deepak from Jogindernagar emerged as the winner, receiving a cash prize of Rs 31,000 and the traditional “Gurj.” Farukh from Patiala secured the runner-up position and was awarded Rs 21,000.
The event was attended by representatives from local bodies, Panchayati Raj institutions, urban authorities, and various government departments, making it a grand celebration of tradition and progress.
The successful conclusion of the Mini Shivaratri Fair not only reflected the rich cultural spirit of Jogindernagar but also showcased the government’s ongoing dedication to regional development.
