Toilet at Rohtak varsity used to transfer MBBS exam answer sheets for tampering: Probe

The ongoing police investigation into the MBBS exam scam at Pt BD Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak (UHSR), has revealed that after being smuggled out of the secrecy branch, the answer sheets of students enrolled in a private college were handed over to the main accused by a Class-IV outsourced employee in a toilet located in the university’s administration block.

DSP Dalip Singh, who is leading the investigation, confirmed that the toilet near the secrecy branch was used as a meeting point for transferring the answer sheets. “The Class-IV employee and another accused have also demarcated the location during a recent police remand," he added.

No CCTV cameras at location

An official of Pt BD Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak, said the toilet in the administrative block of the university was the only place where CCTV cameras could not be installed. “This may have been the reason it was chosen as the meeting place for the illegal activity,” he added.

Both individuals are among the 17 UHSR employees named in the FIR filed on February 15 in connection with the scam. Their services have already been terminated by the UHSR authorities based on both the police investigation and the preliminary inquiry conducted by the university itself.

“Initially, the answer sheets were clandestinely smuggled out by the Class-IV employee from the secrecy branch and handed over to the other accused in a bag in the toilet to avoid detection of this illegal activity. Both have confessed to their involvement during police remand. After being re-attempted, the answer sheets were later returned to the same Class-IV employee at the same location for re-submission to the secrecy branch for evaluation," said sources from the police department.

Sources also said the police recently took the accused on a four-hour remand to demarcate the answer sheet transfer area. “The police are now determining the role of other employees at the secrecy branch, if any, in the scam,” the sources added.

An official from UHSR said the toilet in the administrative block of the university was the only place where CCTV cameras could not be installed. “This may have been the reason it was chosen as the meeting place for the illegal activity,” he added.

The scandal involved the smuggling of answer sheets from the UHSR for both annual and supplementary MBBS exams. Students were allowed to reattempt answers, which were then re-submitted by the UHSR employees for the evaluation to secure passing marks for the students through fraudulent means.

The Tribune had exposed the scam in January, leading to the registration of an FIR against 41 individuals, including 24 MBBS students from a private college and 17 UHSR employees. Roshan Lal and Rohit were among those regular employees recently dismissed by UHSR authorities.
