Amid tension between Israel and Turkey, this country launches ‘most destructive weapon’ of 21st century, its name is…, the country is…, not US, Iran, Russia
Greece’s Achilles’ Shield: In a major technological upgrade towards its defence infrastructure, NATO country Greece has announced its “Achilles’ Shield” program, under which it plans to integrate measures to counter tactical naval vessels, submarines, ballistic missiles, aircraft, and the increasingly critical threat of drones. Notably, the project is envisioned under the comprehensive, five-tiered defense architecture plan of Greece. Here are all the details you need to know.
“Achilles’ Shield” of Greece
The “Achilles’ Shield” of Greece is being made with the aims of combining existing defense resources with cutting-edge technologies to protect Greece against various threats coming from air and water.
Expected to be operational by 2027, the “Achilles’ Shield” program is a top priority for the Greece Mitsotakis government’s defense development plans , as per a report carried by Greek Reporter.
Notably, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced that Greece will spend 25 billion euros (US$27 billion) in the next 12 years in the “most drastic transformation in the history of the country’s armed forces”.
Greece plans a major overall
“We propose a comprehensive, full approach to defense. To start with, a complete change of dogma,” Defense Minister Nikos Dendia was quoted as saying in the report about the defence overall program.
“We’re moving beyond the outdated notion of solely relying on the fleet to defend the Aegean. With ‘Achilles’ Shield,’ we’re implementing a comprehensive, multi-layered defense across our entire territory”, he added.
“This new approach leverages a sophisticated yet cost-effective network of concealed and AI-driven missile systems, under unified ‘command and control,’ to counter threats from missiles, aircraft, drones, surface vessels, and submarines”, the minister said about the new approach to security.
Meaning of “Achilles’ Shield”
Notably, the name “Achilles’ Shield” is a reference to the legendary shield described in Homer’s Iliad.
In addition to this technological development, Greece is also actively looking at the Israeli-made BARAK (Lightning) air defense system to replace its aging Soviet-era S-300s, as per a report by Neos Kosmos, a local media outlet of Greece.
Notably, the BARAK system is a short-range surface-to-air missile designed for ship-borne point-defense, aimed at providing air protection against aircraft, anti-ship missiles, and UAVs.
