Ex-India player gives reality check to CSK, says ‘MS Dhoni should have retired 2023 IPL’
New Delhi: MS Dhoni’s recent performance in IPL 2025 has drawn criticism, as the Chennai Super Kings captain has struggled to deliver wins in crucial moments despite his reputation as a reliable finisher.
Manoj Tiwary believes MS Dhoni should have retired from the IPL in 2023. The former Indian cricketer expressed a strong opinion that Dhoni’s continued participation in the league is unwarranted.
“Forgive me if I’m being a little strict here. He should have retired after the 2023 IPL; it was his best time. With all the respect he has earned over the years, fans have not been able to see him in the last two years, and he is getting lost. Look at how the Chennai fans are reacting, coming out on the roads and giving those interviews,” he said in a chat on Cricbuzz.
Chennai Super Kings captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, is the only CSK batter to maintain a strike rate above 150 this season, scoring 121 runs across four matches. However, the team’s middle order has underperformed, with no other batsman achieving a strike rate of 140 or higher. MS Dhoni’s batting position and form have also drawn criticism, as he has scored 76 runs off 55 balls (strike rate 138.18) in four games.
