Portmore school students receive training in disaster preparedness

Students at Government Model Girls School, Portmore, were educated on self-protection during natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides and floods in a two-day mock drill organised by a special team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), led by SI Naseem Khan.

The event saw participation from students in classes VI to IX. The SDRF team demonstrated practical techniques on how to stay calm during disasters and conduct rescue operations. Students were taught how to carry injured peers to safety, administer first aid and maintain alertness and teamwork in emergency situations.

On Thursday, under the guidance of the SDRF team, the students participated with enthusiasm. The following day, another mock drill was held to further train the students in disaster response. During the session, the disaster management in-charge, Rama Negi, explained how the safety techniques learned in the drills could be applied to real-life situations.

The principal of the school, Rakhi Pandit, addressed the students, highlighting the life-saving nature of such drills and urging everyone to stay prepared. She commended the efforts of the disaster management team and teachers, saying, “The event not only raised awareness among the students but also empowered them with self-defence skills and a spirit of cooperation during disasters.”
