Heavy Rains Expected In Parts Of Kerala, Yellow Alert Issued For 4 Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain or thundershowers in many parts of Kerala and a few regions in Lakshadweep, with a yellow alert in place for four districts of Kerala on Saturday.

According to the latest IMD bulletin, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, and Wayanad have been issued a yellow alert for April 6, warning of heavy rainfall likely to occur at isolated places. The alert comes as Konni in Pathanamthitta district recorded 7 cm of rain in the past 24 hours.

Although no major change in maximum temperatures was noted across the state, Vellanikkara stood out as the hottest location, recording a peak temperature of 36.5°C. In the capital city, the IMD has predicted a generally cloudy sky with intermittent spells of rain or thundershowers. The maximum temperature in Thiruvananthapuram is expected to hover around 34°C.

Despite widespread rain in Kerala, Lakshadweep remained mostly dry. However, scattered rainfall may develop over the islands in the coming days, the IMD said.

Precautions For Yellow Alert 

Residents in the alerted districts are advised to remain cautious due to the potential for heavy rainfall between 7–11 cm in 24 hours. The public is urged to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall may lead to reduced visibility and traffic congestion, along with the possibility of waterlogging and uprooted trees, which can cause power disruptions and travel delays. There is also a risk of landslides in hilly areas, partial damage to vulnerable homes, and destruction of mature crops and vegetable plantations.

The IMD has also warned of possible lightning strikes that could harm individuals and livestock in open areas.

Authorities have recommended avoiding travel through vulnerable routes during heavy rainfall, staying clear of unsafe structures, supporting vegetable pandals to prevent collapse, and seeking safe shelter during thunderstorm activity. People are also urged to monitor weather updates and follow any traffic or safety advisories issued by local administrations.
