Mini Shivaratri Mela wrestling tourney kicks off in Jogindernagar

The state-level mini Shivaratri Mela wrestling tournament began on a spirited note in Jogindernagar, Mandi district, drawing wrestlers from across Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring regions. On the opening day, 46 wrestlers showcased their skill, strength, and stamina in a series of gripping bouts that thrilled the crowd and set the tone for the three-day event.

Organised as part of the traditional Shivaratri celebrations, the tournament is set to conclude on April 5, with the final match expected to draw large audiences. The winner of the championship will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 31,000 along with a gurj — a ceremonial mace — symbolising victory and honour. The runner-up will receive a cash prize of Rs 21,000. Both awards will be presented during the Mela’s closing ceremony.

The event is being coordinated by Naib Tehsildar Vinay Rashpa, Principal Ashish Koda, Prof Pradeep Kumar, and retired Naib Tehsildar Krishna Chand. Judging responsibilities are being handled by an experienced panel that includes Keshav Ram, Hariya Ram, Beeri Singh, and Krishna Chand. Stage proceedings are being anchored by Nek Ram Shastri and Rajender Singh.

The tournament serves as a vibrant platform to promote traditional wrestling while offering local talent a chance to shine on a larger stage. With more intense matches lined up, anticipation is building for the grand finale, which promises to be a highlight of this year’s Mela celebrations.
