'If The Cabinet Protects Thieves, It Should Be In Jail': Sukanta Majumdar Slams Mamata Over SSC Scam

Following the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Calcutta High Court verdict that cancelled the appointments of nearly 26,000 teachers and non-teaching staff in West Bengal, BJP leaders have launched a fierce attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. BJP has demanded her resignation, accusing her government of large-scale corruption in the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment process.

Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar said that Mamata Banerjee could become the second Chief Minister in India to face jail over recruitment scams, after former Haryana CM O.P. Chautala. Majumdar directly held Mamata and her cabinet responsible for the scam, stating:

“After the Supreme Court’s order yesterday, Mamata Banerjee appeared before the media and blamed everyone else. If the cabinet decides to protect thieves, then that cabinet should be in jail. This issue is close to my heart because I got my first job through this very exam. Yesterday, because of Mamata Banerjee, a university gold medallist was crying. If anyone is responsible for that, it is Mamata Banerjee and her entire cabinet."

He further alleged that honest candidates were denied jobs despite their merit.

“She had got her job through her hard work, but Mamata Banerjee’s advisors told her that if you want to protect TMC leaders, then mix milk with water so no one can tell them apart. But this trick was exposed. The court said that if milk and water cannot be separated, then throw both away. Mamata Banerjee has turned West Bengal into a marketplace — if you want to buy a teaching job, just pay money. Those who are eligible should be given money from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund."

BJP Slams Mamata's Secularism and Minority Politics

Majumdar also attacked Mamata Banerjee for what he called “pseudo-secularism.” Referring to her recent comments in London, he said:

“We saw Mamata Banerjee calling herself secular in an event in London last week. What kind of secularism is that? It is pseudo-secularism. Mamata Banerjee attends Eid Namaz at Red Road every year, but according to Islam, the Namaz after Ramzan is only for Muslims who have observed fasting. Hindus, or those who haven’t fasted, are not allowed to participate. Still, Mamata Banerjee attends it every year without fail. But if you ask her to come to the Kumbh Mela, she calls it ‘Mithu Kumbh.’ She never attends it. This is her version of secularism — everything is for the minorities. And by minorities, she means only Muslims.”

He also questioned the definition of “minority” in the Indian context, pointing out that Muslims make up over 30% of West Bengal's population, which he believes disqualifies them from being termed a minority.

Allegations of Radical Group Links and BJP's Warning

On a more serious note, Majumdar hinted at possible links between Mamata Banerjee and radical groups active in both West Bengal and Bangladesh:

“Our party has close relations with people in the border districts, and we are aware of some groups that operate in both Bangladesh and West Bengal. Whether Mamata Banerjee has direct ties with these groups, I don’t know — I don’t have evidence. So I won’t comment on that. But it is clear that groups like Jamaat, which are active in both regions, stand beside Mamata Banerjee and TMC during every election.”

BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra supported Majumdar’s statements and described the SSC recruitment scandal as a massive “Bribe for Job Scam.” Detailing the scale of the alleged corruption, he said:

“Everyone is aware of what’s happening in Bengal — corruption, lawlessness, and Mamata Banerjee’s dominance. Even globally, people are watching. Just yesterday, the Supreme Court gave its verdict on the school recruitment scam. Between 2016 and 2021, around 23 to 24 lakh people applied for teacher and non-teaching staff positions that were advertised. During this time, approximately 25,780 appointments were made. The level of corruption was so high that many people took the matter to court. It became known as the Bribe for Job' Scam."

“Mamata Banerjee said in Oxford that she is a tigress. But no tigress is ever involved in corruption. No real leader robs people and sends their lives into hell through corruption. But it’s painful to say that Mamata Banerjee and her government have unleashed corruption in Bengal. And now, lakhs of people are suffering its consequences."

The BJP has stated that if it comes to power in West Bengal, the full weight of legal action will be taken against all those involved in the scam — including Mamata Banerjee and her cabinet.
